Write Like an Egyptian ☆ Kindy 3

Hello, everyone.

This month, we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt! We’ve learned about mummies, pyramids, gods and goddesses, cats, scarabs, and more. Ancient Egypt was one of the first civilizations to build large cities and buildings, use math and science, and invent calendars and writing. They wrote in hieroglyphs and even invented their own kind of paper called papyrus.

To make papyrus, people took the stem of the papyrus plant, which grew along the Nile River, and cut it into strips. They soaked the strips in water and then laid them on top of each other in a criss-cross pattern to make a sheet of papyrus. The wet papyrus plant would naturally glue itself together.

We did something similar in Kindy 3 with strips of paper, water and glue, to learn how early paper (papyrus) was invented and made.

After making our papyrus and leaving it to dry, we practiced writing on it like the Ancient Egyptians. We used calligraphy ink to write hieroglyphs and draw pictures.

Some of us wrote our names in hieroglyphs, others wrote secret messages, but all of us had a lot of fun practicing our calligraphy skills on the paper!
