All About Australia! ☆ Kindy 1

2026/01/29

In January and February, we are learning about countries and nationalities in Kindy 1!

We have been talking about where people are from, where they grew up and where they live now. Some of the countries we have been talking about include Japan, Australia, U.S.A and Canada.

Since our teacher Aleesha is from Australia, we decided to use a traditional method of painting and create some fun boomerangs! A boomerang is a traditional Aboriginal Australian tool, often curved and crafted with airfoils or wood to spin and return to the thrower.

We started by listening carefully when Aleesha was explaining how to do Aboriginal dot painting.

Dot painting is a simple, art technique where images are created using small dots of paint rather than brush strokes. Inspired by traditional Aboriginal Australian art, it helped Kindy 1 to build fine motor skills, focus, and creativity by using tools like Q-tips, cotton swabs, or specialized dot markers to fill in shapes.

To colour our boomerangs, we used the ends of a Q-tip to dot, dot, dot the paint all over.

Once we were all finished, we waited for the boomerangs to dry, then laminated and cut them out (Thank you, Paula!).

We can try throwing them and see if they return, though it might work better with a wooden one!

They are beautiful, good job Kindy 1!

Thank you for reading :)
