experiment ★ Kindy 2

This month our theme for Science was all about Inventions and Experiments, and the children all had a chance to be little scientists. We first looked at different science and experiment tools, we discussed what an invention was, as well as what an experiment was. The children were really curious about the different things we looked at and discussed, and they could not wait to have a turn to be a scientist themselves.

For our experiment, we decided to recreate the watercycle and we discussed how rain clouds are formed. We learned how the sun soaked up the water, and when the clouds become too heavy, that's what it rains and the water is recycled back into the ocean, rivers, lakes, and other water sources. Before we got started on our experiment, the children had a chance to explore the different science experiment tools that we had looked at and spoken about in lesson time.

It was finally time for the children to become the little scientists that they were so excited to be! Each of the children had a chance to wear a scientist coat, and conduct their experiment. First, they each had a cup with some water, which we called our "ocean", with some shaving foam for our clouds. We practiced how to squeeze the "eye-droppers" both gently and how to release to suck up the blue water which was our rain. This was a tricky skill for some children, to be able to control the pressure of squeezing so that they let out only 1 small drop of rain at a time, and what happens when they squeeze too hard and all their rain came out in one spot.

There was lots of excitement when the rain began to fall through the clouds and we watched closely as it mixed back into our oceans. The children absolutely loved this experiment, and discovering and testing how many drops of rain it would take before it became too heavy for their clouds to hold it, before it came through.
